NELVA RUIZ-MARTINEZ

Board of Directors

President, Associated Student Government

San Bernardino Valley College

Nelva Ruiz-Martinez is a first-generation college student and an extraordinary advocate for student rights. Born in East Los Angeles in 1995, Nelva's journey is one of tenacity, resilience, and unwavering dedication. Despite unforeseen circumstances that led to an interruption in her education after attending Mt. San Antonio College, she capitalized on this hiatus to broaden her skillset, earning her real estate license and notary certificate, and gaining valuable experience as a mechanic.

In 2019, Nelva took the critical step of returning to college, enrolling in San Bernardino Valley College (SBVC) to pursue her passion for political science. Her charismatic leadership swiftly gained recognition, culminating in her election as the Associated Student Government President. In this role, Nelva was instrumental in advocating for student rights, engaging in community initiatives, and contributing positively to the campus environment.

An opportunity arose to further her leadership influence as the first-ever Student Ambassador for the San Bernardino Community College District, representing both SBVC and Crafton Hills College. This position enabled Nelva to advocate at a higher level, joining the chancellor's cabinet members and trustees on a trip to Washington DC. There, she held productive discussions with Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona and Senator Alex Padilla on streamlining SNAP benefits.

Further demonstrating her commitment to her community, Nelva also represented her peers at the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC), voicing student concerns and issues at the state level. Her passion and dedication led to her election as the SSCCC Legislative Affairs Director for Region 9, a role where she focuses on legislative advocacy and student engagement.

Nelva recently celebrated her graduation from SBVC with three Associate's degrees in the following: Political Science, Anthropology, and Liberal Arts. She has been accepted into UCLA and is excited to continue her academic journey there. Her ambitious plans include earning her bachelor's degree in political science within two years, before pursuing further studies at Harvard. With a vision to represent her community further, Nelva aspires to become the first Latina Mayor of her city.
