ELAINE MONTALVO

Costume Designer

Elaine Montalvo was born in Madera, California, near the city of Fresno. She is the second to the youngest of a Mexican American family of twelve children. Her parents provided by working in the agricultural fields of the San Joaquin Valley. Despite modest financial resources, education and independence were always emphasized in her home.

Elaine received scholarships to attend the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to college, the art, design and entertainment industries seemed inconceivable as career possibilities; but when presented with the opportunity to explore them, Elaine immersed herself in these disciplines with a deep level of commitment. Under the mentorship of several renowned professors, Elaine quickly

developed as a highly proficient and unique designer. After receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley with a double major in Film and Psychology, Elaine continued her studies at the California Institute of the Arts where she

received a Master of Fine Arts interdisciplinary degree in Costume Design and Creative Writing. Her professional career started before graduating and has continued with great success since that time.


Elaine has costume designed over thirty-three feature films including the award-winning Searchlight release Flamin’ Hot directed by Eva Longoria, starring Jesse Garcia and Annie Gonzalez. Other film credits include the adaptation of New York Times Bestselling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, One True Loves starring Simu Liu, Phillipa Soo and Luke Bracey; the highly acclaimed movie, A Better Life, directed by Chris Weitz for which Demian Bichir was nominated for an Academy Award as leading actor. Elaine also designed Real Women Have Curves starring America Ferrera which was the winner of the 2002 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award and Chuck and Buck, the winner of the Independent Spirit Award. Some of Elaine’s television work include the series Blindspotting, Gentefied, The Walking Dead, Big Time Rush, FX’s Peabody award-winning drama series The Bridge, and the widely acclaimed PBS magical-realist series Foto-Novelas. Elaine recently produced and costume designed the awardwinning independent short film The Kill Floor which explores the neglect of worker safety in meatpacking plants during the COVID pandemic. Elaine continues to commit herself to her craft and approach her projects with a unique understanding of character and story.
